Stride for Stephen – 75 mile walk in 25 hours
Stride take on gruelling 75 mile walk over 25 hours from Portsmouth to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable trust headquarters in London.
The walk will raise money for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust who support young adults from minority groups to study and qualify as Architects and other Built Environment Professionals. The walk is over 25 hours to mark the 25 years since Stephen Lawrence’s death.
The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was founded in 1988 by (now baroness) Doreen Lawrence after the loss of her son Stephen to an unprovoked racist attack. Before his murder, Stephen had dreamt of becoming an Architect. The Trust now supports young adults from ethnic minorities, aged 13 to 30, in realising and achieving their potential in a career in architecture.
Prime minister Theresa May has announced that there will be an annual Stephen Lawrence Day. Due to this, and the success of Stride’s National Three Peaks Challenge last year, (also in aid of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust), the team wanted to undertake another significant challenge to raise more money and awareness for the Trust.
Stride, a local recruitment company specialising in the placement of Architects and Built Environment personnel, located in Portsmouth, where they will start their walk at 4am on the 13th July.
The team will walk for around 15 hours on day 1 to Guildford, where they will catch a few hours sleep before departing at 6am on day 2. Aiming to arrive at the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust headquarters at 4pm, having walked for a total of 25 hours.
Stride hope to raise £5,000 for the Trust, to support their Building Futures campaign, which aims to collect donations that total £250,000 in 2018. This will enable the Trust to establish a new London-wide mentoring programme specific to the built environment. They will develop Social Value Enhancement programmes across the capital and host industry events, which from 2018 will be held at Your Space, a newly renovated, iconic Stephen Lawrence Centre.
The 8 strong team, consisting of Clive Hutchings, Scott Thornton, Mark Nagle, Rob Hutchings, Charlotte Hall, Beth Hollis, Sophie Atkinson and Charlotte Northam, is extremely excited and motivated to complete the challenge. They will also be joined by their colleague, Shannon Rix who plans to complete the last few miles, despite being 8 months pregnant!
“This is the 2nd year that Stride has pushed themselves to undertake an extraordinary challenge for the benefit of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust,. Though I’m sure we’ll have sore feet and a few blisters as a result, we’re excited to take on the challenge and together we will make it in 2 days.”

The team have already raised over £500 including gift aid, but hope to raise over £5,000 by the time their walk is completed, you can find out more about their journey and sponsor Stride at www.stride25.co.uk
