Stride for Stephen 2018

Last year 10 members of the Stride team took on the National Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.

Having raised over £4,000 to date, the team are now ready to take on a special challenge to commemorate the 20th year of the trust.

For those who are unaware, the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was founded in memory of Stephen Lawrence. A bright young man who dreamed of becoming an Architect and to have a positive impact on his community. Tragically, his dream of becoming an Architect was never realised, and on the 22nd April 1993, at the age of 18, Stephen was killed in an unprovoked racist attack.

The trust inspires and supports young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds to study and qualify as Architects. Offering financial aid and mentoring, the trust aims to increase the number of minorities studying and working in this field.

Expanding by £800m in seven years, the London architecture industry is rapidly growing. The training and support of Architects is essential to ensure London’s architecture industry continues to grow and prosper and remain one of the best places in the world to study Architecture.

According to the London Festival of Architecture, the London Architecture industry is less diverse than the all-sector average, with only around 16% of all architecture and engineering jobs in London held by ethnic minorities, compared to 31% across all sectors[1]. This demonstrates the importance of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust’s work in the sector, ensuring everyone gets a fair chance at a career to achieve their career aspirations, regardless of race.

This year it will be 25 years since Stephen’s death, and over Friday 13th and Saturday 14th July 2018, Stride will walk for 25 hours from their Portsmouth office to the Stephen Lawrence HQ in Deptford.

The route will follow the A3 to Guildford, where they will break off and head toward the Surrey hills, travel along the A24, through Epsom, Mitcham and Dulwich Village before reaching the Stephen Lawrence Trust 25 hours later. Walking for 14 hours on day one and 11 on day two, the challenge will require a lot of training and dedication from all team members. Stride aims to raise over £4,000, which will help pay for a young person’s Architectural studies.

We’ll keep you up to date on Stride’s training and their progress during their 25-hour walk. All costs will be covered by the business to ensure all sponsorship raised by the team will go directly to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.
